Sugar Land City Council has selected their preferred site for the minor league stadium. It's at the northeast corner of Highway 6 and Highway 90. It looks like that is pretty much right across Highway 6 from the airport.
I'm curious what improvements would be made to Hwy 6 to allow for the increased traffic. It already takes increasingly long times to get to Lifetime Fitness out that way, as well as Super Target and restaurants. The traffic backs up all the time both ways on 6, at the light at 59.
The ballpark is supposed to be ready for Opening Day 2012. It sounds like Sugar Land is gearing up fro AAA, and possibly the Atlantic League. The Astros appear to be blocking any affiliation with a major league club.
I spoke with the Sugar Land City Manager at the preview of the Houston Museum of Natural Science Sugar Land. He explained to me how the Museum was part of the City's strategic planning to make Sugar Land a destination city. It's clear the baseball park is part of that same vision.
I've lived in Sugar Land now for 16 years, and the growth here has been a two sided coin. It's great we have more to do and more amenities within close driving distance. But, crime has gone up and the traffic is bad and getting worse. I'm mostly an optimist, and I embrace progress, so I'm ready to see Sugar Land make the most of this new opportunity.
I'm betting on Sugar Land Express as the name of the team.

I would like to see the Sugar Land Imperials.
This is seriously in my backyard. Nearly literally.
I like the Imperials! Would it be a good thing or a bad thing for them to be in your backyard?
If I wanted to sell my house, I wonder if someone connected to the team would want to be able to walk to work?
This is pretty fun really. I wonder about the traffic but I think it would be so good to have some team identity here and hope these guys could make it to the show.
One huge problem for landing any MLB affiliate: The Houston Astros and their current high minor team locations.
AAA is Round Rock
AA is Corpus Christi
Moving either to Sugar Land shrinks their territory, and both are close enough to Houston to negate the need to relocate (plus both have quality stadiums).
This will be an independent league team, with all the quirks that come with such affiliation.
well, i knew it wasnt "rocket" science many months ago when this news article broke and there was talk that a contest for a lifelong season pass would be the award for naming the team. i IMMEDIATELY thought the befitting name would be the Imperials.
NOBODY @ the Chamber of Commerce; the Chronicle; etc ad naus had a clue as to where i could enter any contest for naming the team. presuming this contest exists/has been going on for a while really hacks me off-

I've been concerned as a resident in the area for sometime. The city plans to expand the airport and add the ball park. Both will destroy the quality of life in the immediate area of Chelsea Harbor and New Territory. What's even more perplexing is the fact that the city seems to be using some of our bonds and tax dollars to fund portions of these projects and if you look at the financial reports several of the council members appear to be involved with some of the companies who will benefit from these deals. I thought the city had an ethics code? What happened to it?
