If Shami promised Gilbert $1 million, we aren't seeing the totality of that yet. The next campaign finance reports for candidates in contested primaries are due on thirty days out from Election Day - Feb. 2nd - two and a half weeks from now.
Gilbert got out of the Governor's race on 12/4/2009 and endorsed Farouk Shami for Governor on that same day. I think my surprise is that Shami did not make more donations to more Democratic candidates.
UPDATE: Ross Ramsey with the Texas Tribune wrote about this as well (after my post went up, but hey, who's looking for attribution?). He's got some interesting details including the tidbit that Shami did not report the Gilbert contributions on his campaign finance reports. He'll have to correct that.

Is Farouk a Democrat? Or is this campaign about something else?
Thanks to Neil Aquino with Texas Liberal the “Palestine – Jerusalem is Ours” scarf has become an Internet conversation point.
Scarves were being handed out and King gave his to Shami, who put it on, said campaign spokesman Charlie Ray. “It’s not Farouk’s scarf,” Ray said.
Farouk Shami as Grand Marshall of the MLK Parade in Houston – what an insult to Martin Luther King’s legacy! Have Palestinians ‘hijacked’ this cause as well?
Makes you wonder how these scarves just happened to be there – a coincidence? Particularly since Martin Luther King was a strong and vocal supporter of Israel and Jews, who stood with him for the civil rights. MLK Parade support to a cause whose main purpose is the destruction of Israel and Jews, makes one wonder where is this coming from.
To add insult to the injury, most people do not know that it was Arab Muslims who captured the blacks and sold them as slaves. In fact, the Arabic word for black and slave is the same, ''Abed.''
Not that we should be concerned with family members or should we? Farouk’s brother: Dr. Jamil Shami ( http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jamil-shami/11/987/90b ) founded Arab-American Republicans in the greater D.C. area. Any reference to Farouk's family was removed from his campaign website after his son told reporter that Farouk is a Muslim.
