Blogging the Houston Mayoral Race Part 4: MSM Bloggers

Wrapping up this four-part series on who is blogging the 2009 Houston mayoral race, I point you to four mainstream media professional journalists, Bradley Olson of the Houston Chronicle, Mary Benton of Channel 2 News, Miya Shay of Channel 13 News, and Richard Connelly of Hair Balls (Houston Press).
Houston Politics, a Houston Chronicle politics blog, is written by Bradley Olson. He blogs City Hall and Harris County government. Recently, Olson followed up on Republican Harris County Clerk Kaufman's robo call for Locke with information about other Republicans who have endorsed Locke - Harris County Republican Party Chair Jared Woodfill and Republican State Senator Dan Patrick. He analyzed Locke's business plan and discovered this:
The expansion of the Panama Canal will create new opportunities for trade with Asia, Central and South America. Up to 40% of U.S. imports from Asia will pass through the expanded canal - Houston must be ready to capitalize on this opportunity.
which made my friends in Clear Lake ask if Locke had plans to expand Bayport - which they fiercely oppose. Olson is the one who broke the Peter Brown supporter list problem story. Outside of the Chron blog, Olson has an absolutely terrific story in Sunday's paper about the few choices Republicans have in the mayor's race.
On the Beat Blog is written by Mary Benton, of KPRC Channel 2. Benton evaluates the ads (likes Locke's first ad, while it leave her wanting more), reveals that Peter Brown has yard signs and bumper stickers in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese, and comments on polls and endorsements. I can't seem to link to individual posts of Benton's - when I find out how to do that, I'll provide links! Benton is indeed always "on the beat" - I see her at many political functions around town. She's always got photos from the events, which political junkies pore over (a good example would be here post about Parker's filing announcement rally). She's got a great post about Peter Brown and his personal piggy bank.
abc13.com Political Blog is written by Miya Shay of KTRK News. Her postings about the Houston mayoral race include this one about Parker's first ad and Brown's second and the revelation that the mayoral candidates were - as a group - canceling forums they had committed to. I like her short videos where she interviews the candidates on a topic that is in the news, such as this one about the $4 million dollars the taxpayers may have to cough up for stadiums they were promised they would never have to pay for.
This next is more alternative media than "mainstream", but I'm putting it here, anyway . . .
Hair Balls - Richard Connelly writes political news and opinion for this Houston press blog. Connelly is humorous and pointed, as evidenced in this post reviewing Gene Locke's first ad. Now we know why a young Gene Locke looks so familiar - he's a Scottie Pippen look alike. And we know why we were puzzled about Locke's assertion that he revitalized downtown - the video footage is of the medical center. As to the raging controversy (among my political friends, anyway) over Locke's supposed use of real cops in his ad (not allowed), we learn, no - close, but no. As for Parker's first ad, he notes that she personally fights crime and she is calm when looking at the budget, unlike Brown who winces and points energetically. His take on the mayoral candidates canceling the Houston Press/University of Houston-Downtown forum? Not a happy camper:
Thereby dissing you, the Houston Press reader. You had responded to our request for questions admirably, and we were ready to roll on your behalf, until the candidates chickened out. Liza Alonzo of UH-D noted that the campaigns had confirmed their appearance as little as five days ago. Oh, they just love to twist the dagger and leave you hanging. We're sure they are all cackling amongst themselves. Except Roy Morales, who's probably pissed he doesn't have anything to do anymore this Wednesday night.
Admittedly, I thought that was one of the dumber campaign moves - canceling a forum by the Houston Press. I had to wonder if they had been reading Hair Balls and were afraid of the heat Connelly might bring to his review.
