At-Large 1: Litt and Costello

Herman Litt in At-Large 1 recently dropped a mailer which touts his Democratic endorsements. These names on his mailer should be familiar to Democratic voters:

Former HCC Trustee Jay Aiyer, Rep. Alma Allen, Former Congressman Chris Bell, Rep. Ellen Cohen, Former Rep. Paul Colbert, HISD Board Member Carol Mims Galloway, HCDE Board Member Jim Henley, Former HISD School Board Member Howard Jefferson, HCDE Board Member Debra Kerner, Former Judge Al Leal, Council Member Melissa Noriega, Former State Rep. Rick Noriega, Former Council Member Gordon Quan, Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan, Former U.S. Ambassador Arthur Schechter, Former State Rep. Sue Schechter and Former HCC Trustee Richard Schechter.
There are quotes from some of these folks on one side of the mailer, along with a plethora of bio material and information about issues on the other side.
Litt was endorsed by the Houston Chronicle. You'll notice my name on Litt's endorsement list. I can recommend him to you with 100% certainty that he will work hard, do a good job and build consensus around projects and problems that others find difficult to tackle.
Stephen Costello, a self-proclaimed independent also running in At-Large 1, has this ad on TV right now:
I think it's quite good. Costello is an engineer and has experience in flooding and drainage control. He's also a board member of the Memorial Parks Conservancy, so he is a parks guide.
Costello's supporters include the Houston Council of Engineering Companies, Greater Houston Builders Association, Houston Apartment Association Better Government Fund, Houston Contractors Association, Houston Association of Realtors, Greater Houston Restaurant Association, and Houston Building Owners and Management Association.
What are bloggers saying about these two candidates? John Cobarruvias of Bay Area Houston takes issue with Costello's claim of independence. You can listen to Kuff's interview with Litt here, and his interview with Costello here. Otherwise, as you probably have noticed, because of the mayoral race, there is not a lot of chatter in the blogosphere about any of the Council candidates.
I have no idea how large Litt's mail drop was, or how big Costello's TV buy is. If you have information about that, please leave it in the comments.
There are others on the ballot for At-Large 1. The entire list is (in ballot order):
Don Cook
Herman Litt
Lonnie Allsbrooks
Stephen C. Costello
Karen Derr
Rick Rodriguez
Kenneth Perkins
J. Brad Batteau
There will almost certainly be a runoff in this race, and I would not be surprised to find Litt and Costello in it. Karen Derr has been all over town running a very credible campaign, and she has the potential to be in the runoff, as well. If anyone has a scan of a Derr mailer, please send it to me at museblogger@gmail.com and I'll update this post.

Go Costello! I am a Dem, but Costello is my guy in this race!

Derr doesn't have a mailer. She raised a ton of money, but it vanished in high cost HQs, staff that doesn't seem to do much.. I only see Karen at events, anyway, and I usually get the normal robo calls etc. , and haven't gotten one.

No mailer as far as I know. There goes the runoff.

I am also very curious why Litt listed Aiyer, a criminal, as a leading endorsement.

Litt just doesn't light my fire.

I also don't see how a giant list of endorsements makes you qualified for council.

I think Derr turned it around after the District H fiasco. She's clearly working for it. No mail from her, but earlier in the season I got robocalls from her, none lately though.

Costello is a respectable man. I've had several interactions with him at forums and found him to be extremely intelligent and he seems to be running for the right reasons. I was happy to cast a vote for him last week.
