After fending off rumors – and questions about rumors – for the past week, (Sugar Land City Councilman Tom) Abraham said Friday he has been approached by Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson, about the possibility of making a run for Lampson’s seat in Congressional District 22.
That possibility presents itself because certain Democrats are “aggressively pursuing” Lampson to run against U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, according to Abraham and widespread rumor.
Abraham is conflicted about the whole thing because he’s a Republican. And he’s being asked to switch parties.
“They wanted me to run on the Democratic ticket,” he said. “You know what? It will be hard for me to do that.” But is it an impossibility? Abraham said he won’t comment further until he makes up his mind what to do.
I'll say it again. I'm proud to have Nick Lampson as my Congressman. I gave up way too much time away from my family to get him elected (this is where the D.C. Lampson staffer is itching to leave another high school-ish, amusing personal attack in the comments.) My friend Susan was right when she said TX-22 is a sad little orphan congressional district, in need of federal disaster relief. We had the embarrassing situation of having Tom DeLay represent us forever, we chased him out, worked in the hot sun to get Nick elected, and now it looks like Nick is going to abandon us to go running around the state.
Oh, and by the way. Who is this Abraham guy? I LIVE in Sugar Land and he's apparently one of my city councilmen. Never heard of him. A hat tip to the mayor for the rolodex analogy.
