The Republicans In Fort Bend County Launch A Dirty Sign War
Wah, Wah, Wah. Cry me a damn river. The Republicans in Fort Bend County don't like our Had Enough signs that are all over the place, so they are fighting back with their own two man sign war and one of the players is Fort Bend County Commissioner Andy Meyers. YES, that Andy Meyers of Nooky's Erotic Bakery fame. He's the guy who was so super offended by the billboards advertising penis and boob cakes (yum). That sure was such a delicious twist on Had Enough. Like most Republicans, Meyers probably wasn't getting enough and had to go off on the rest of us who were highly entertained by the Nooky bakery billboards.
So, about the sign war. Juanita has been all over the "Want More Illegals? Vote Democrat" signs that went up in the county this week. It was real super obvious that James Pressler, a Fort Bend Republican consultant, put them up and that the Fort Bend County Republican Party Chair, Gary Gillen, wasn't going to denounce them. But, who paid for those awful, race-baiting signs? You can't pull a fast one on Juanita. She checked Andy Meyers' eight day out Texas Ethics Commission Campaign Finance Report and sure enough, she found out that Meyers gave Pressler $2800 to pay for a whole slew of those signs.
It gets better. Bob Dunn, of Fort Bend Now, confronted Meyers about the signs. Here's what the puffy white man had to say for himself:
“They (Democrats) can bitch if they want,” Meyers said of the Democrats, “but what are they going to do – complain about my free speech rights? “Let them scream, and explain themselves,” he (Meyers) said of Democrats.
Meyers said he has 25 or 30 signs. A few that say “Want Higher Taxes? Vote Democrat” were erected, however, the others probably won’t be put up, because he doesn’t have the time, and because of a few complaints.
The Fort Bend Democratic response is this:
“How dare he claim that we support terrorism?” (Don) Bankston said of Meyers. “We have working in our campaign a Gulf War veteran, a veteran of the Vietnam war and a veteran of the Korean War. My son went to Saudi Arabia and fought terrorism. We’re the ones out there fighting in wars that his commander in chief dreams up.”
You better believe there will be a "few" more complaints and a "few" more photos if we see any more of these signs. Count on it.

It's the silly season sure enough; I've wondered just how hateful all of this can get before it gets violent. '08 should be truly contentious.
