Democrats Respond to Delay: Sugar Land Isn't Western Virginia!
The Republicans had their tribute to Tom DeLay yesterday in Sugar Land. You can read about that here. More about that in a minute. The Democrats responded with their own event at Beck's Prime last night in Sugar Land where approximately 100 people crowded onto the patio for a fun evening celebrating all we've done to agitate Tom "Cut and Run" DeLay and to give ourselves a little taste of the big party we'll have on November 7th when Nick Lampson is elected to Congress in the 22nd District! We saw some Republican spies in the restaurant watching us. Did you like what you saw? Yeah, we were having a good time!
Nick was there and gave a rousing talk to the crowd. He's always great, but I'm not sure I've ever seen him so pumped up! You always know with Nick, that he really appreciates the hard work his supporters are doing for him. Like I tell him, my day always improves when I'm around Nick because he is such a positive person. It rubs off on you!
Here's a shot of the crowd listening to Nick:
Some of the hardest working, most enthusiastic Democrats in Fort Bend County!!
Nita Sane, running for Fort Bend County Treasurer (she's awesome!!), and Fort Bend Democrats Club president, Tony Crabs:
David Van Os made a surprise appearance!
So, what did Tom have to say at his event in Sugar Land yesterday (where I heard there was an ice sculpture with two American flags and the word "Tom" above it)? Dumb stuff like this:
“and for this guy to say that he can’t tell where I’m going to be on Nov. 7th, therefore I am forced to be on the ballot, and the Democrats are just loving it. Well, I may give them just exactly what they want.” (really!? Great! Because when I go block walking it is VERY obvious voters in TX-22 are sick and tired of the Tom DeLay era of corruption in Washington. And, Tom, YOU couldn't tell Judge Sparks where you would be on Nov. 7th, remember? Big, big mistake.)
There was this:
“They can’t win at the ballot box, they can’t win in the legislative body, so they’ve got to run to the judiciary for everything.” (sorta like Bush v. Gore? And, oh, we WILL win at the ballot box. The quote should have been, "I knew I couldn't win at the ballot box, so I took my campaign cash and ran like hell to Northern California.")
This is precious:
“only in this state can the federal judiciary force somebody to run for office. It’s absolutely amazing. This isn’t about me. It’s about the voters and the people in the 22nd District having the ability to have a choice on the Nov. 7th ballot of the person they want to represent them."
(Tom. It's the U.S. Constitution that can force you to stay on the ballot. Sigh. If it's about the voters, for the one millionth time, we are reminding you the voters chose you to be on the ballot against Lampson. Remember the March primary?)
He tried to weasel out of all of his big boy talk after the speech with this:
“Well, I didn’t annouce that. We’re going to have to wait and see what the Fifth Circuit Court does with the appeal.” (Yeah. THAT MIGHT BE WISE. To shut up and act like what you really want is to be declared ineligible since that is what that lawsuit is all about. Do you want to run? Not want to run? Be a Decider!)
Thanks to the Bay Area New Democrats (BAND) and Katy Area New Democratic Organization (KANDO) for co-sponsoring this fun event! We enjoyed having you in Sugar Land!
UPDATE: Charles Kuffner posts about the event at Off the Kuff here and here. And, also, Perry Dorrell tells you all about it at Brains and Eggs. So, you liked those photos I emailed you this morning, PDittie? :)

Excellent report Muse. Thanks for taking pictures for the rest of us to see. Great to see David Van Os make a surprise appearance too.
Thanks for the great report Muse and great pictures. Happy to see that David Van Os made a surprise appearance too. That DVO he's a whirlwind. It's an exciting time in CD22 and I wish you all the best. Beat that "cut and run coward" Tom DeLay anyway you can.
You mean I get a twofer--voting FOR Lampson and AGAINST DeLay with one vote? Hog heaven! Tom Delay actively campaigning against Lampson is like getting into a gunfight with someone and stupidly helping the other guy to reload his gun. DeLay might just as well hold fundraisers for Lampson--he's gonna be fundraising for him anyway, even if he's not actually the AUCTIONEER at the event. But then nobody wants to see that again.
I am so sorry I missed this. I have been in bed fighting off a cold...At least I have had all the recent "Will he or won't he?" news on Tom to keep me entertained.
I am fascinated that some Republicans actually think Tom could win. When he ran in '04, at the height of Bush's popularity, before Abramoff broke, and against an opponent who spent $500,000, DeLay won a mere 54% of the vote.
Anyone else think the landscape has changed a bit since the Swift Boat days?
What is it they say about a bad penny?
On the subject of the residency of The Politician Formerly Known as the Hammer, the Austin American-Statesman's humor columnist, John Kelso, has a hilarious piece in Sunday's edition. You will find it here. (Free subscription required.)
Mark, we missed you! It wasn't the same without you. :(
I've just read a speech by Bill Moyers which has much to say about your T-22's once and (hopefully) not future congressman. (Baptists and even former Baptists [and you know who you are!] should especially enjoy it.) Warning: It's rather long and it will take a while to get to the TD material, but it's worth the effort IMO. You will find the text here.
